You were told grass-finished was the only clean choice. Here's the full story.

We're not here to tear down grass-finished beef. We're here to make sure you have the truth — so you can decide for yourself.

THE BELIEF YOU PROBABLY CAME IN WITH

Somewhere along the way, a clear story took hold in the food world:

Grass-fed = natural, clean, ethical. Grain-fed = industrial, cheap, compromised.

It's a tidy narrative. And like most tidy narratives, it's only part of the picture.

If you've spent more money on grass-finished beef and walked away disappointed — tougher texture, gamier taste, not what you expected for what you paid — that's not in your head. That's the tradeoff the label doesn't explain.

You deserve the full story.

WHAT THE LABELS ACTUALLY MEAN

Grass-Fed / Grass-Finished
The animal ate grass its entire life. Leaner, with a more mineral, sometimes gamier flavor. Can be excellent. Can also be inconsistent — heavily dependent on pasture quality, season, and how the animal was handled. Not inherently safer or more humane than grain-finished. Not regulated to mean "no hormones" or "no antibiotics."

Grain-Finished

The animal spent most of its life on pasture, then was transitioned to a grain diet for the final phase — typically 100–200 days. This is how the majority of high-quality American beef, including USDA Prime and Choice, is produced. Grain-finishing produces the marbling and consistent flavor most people prefer. It is not the same as a factory feedlot.

The real question was never grass vs. grain.

It was always: who raised it, how did they raise it, and what exactly went into it?

HOW WE DO IT — AND WHY IT'S DIFFERENT

Our cattle spend most of their lives on Ohio pasture. For the final 180 days, they're finished on non-GMO grains we grow and mix ourselves — right here on our farms.

Here's what every animal raised through BVBC receives:

✔︎ Pasture time before finishing
✔︎ Non-GMO homegrown grain blend— no fillers, no byproducts. Nothing weird.
✔︎ No added growth hormones
✔︎ No routine antibiotics (only used to treat illness, never for growth)
✔︎ Raised on Ohio family farms you can visit
✔︎ Traceable back to the farm it came from

The result is beef with the marbling and flavor of a premium steakhouse cut — and the transparency of a farmers market.
